As Heavy Rains Drenched South Korea, 1,300 People Were Evacuated and Four People Died

Authorities in South Korea warn that the unseasonable downpour will continue, resulting in four fatalities and almost 1,300 evacuations. Two men in their 80s were among the dead. One of them, according to authorities, was attempting to remove floodwaters from his home’s basement.

A wall toppled over a third victim’s automobile, crushing him. The car was “being swept away” when he contacted his wife just before, according to the authorities. A heart attack claimed the life of the fourth victim. I couldn’t understand how something like this could happen,” says Kim Ha-min, who owns a diner in Gwangju. She claims that she has never had such intense rain before.

The government of South Korea has increased the weather-related disaster alert to its highest level due to the unprecedented rains. Everything is covered by water except the roof [of my house],” a person in one of the impacted locations posted on the internet.

The worst-hit city, Seosan on the west coast of the country, received around 400 mm of rain in only half a day; the meteorological service called it a once-in-a-century occurrence. Social media posts feature videos and images of homes and cars that are underwater, with furniture floating in the water.
