In an effort to demonstrate support for the semi-autonomous Danish territory, which US President Donald Trump has stated he wants to annexe because of its advantageous Arctic location, Denmark’s King Frederik IX has visited Greenland. The monarch’s visit to Nuuk, the island’s capital, comes after Greenland’s new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, visited Copenhagen earlier this week.
Frederik expressed his happiness at being in Greenland to Danish media, adding that he had no particular purpose for his visit. Nielsen told reporters that the king is popular on the island and that Frederik’s affection for Greenland could not be questioned.
He was supposed to visit Station Nord, the island’s northernmost military and scientific facility, and meet with a Danish special forces dogsled team that patrols the most isolated areas of Greenland. Still, bad weather caused him to postpone both plans.
In July of last year, months after assuming the Danish throne following his mother’s resignation, Frederik made his yearly pilgrimage to Greenland, which is customary for Denmark’s royal family. The most recent trip follows US Vice President JD Vance’s accusation that Denmark is underinvesting in a remote US military base on the island, made earlier this month.
