Removed Hours after a spectacular rebel march overran Damascus and put an end to the Assad family’s 50-year rule, Syrian President Bashar Al Assad escaped to Moscow on Sunday, according to Russian media.
According to an unnamed Kremlin source quoted by the Russian agencies Tass and RIA, Assad and his family were granted sanctuary in Moscow, his old ally and protector. The Associated Press reached out to the Kremlin for comment but was unable to confirm the stories right away.
Additionally, RIA said that Syrian militants had assured Moscow that Russian military installations and diplomatic missions in Syria would be secure.
According to reports, Assad departed Syria early on Sunday. Following a spectacular rebel advance that ended the Assad family’s 50-year iron reign, Syrians poured into the streets, which were resounding with joyous gunfire. Earlier in the day, Russia said that it has summoned a meeting of the UN Security Council to address the Syrian crisis on Monday.
Russia has called for urgent closed-door consultations of the Security Council of the United Nations given the latest events in Syria, of which the depth and consequences for this country and the whole region have not yet been measured,” a senior Russian official with ties to the UN wrote on Telegram on Sunday.
