After a video of an Australian sports presenter slurring her way through a live cross from the Winter Olympics in Italy went viral, even the prime minister of Australia spoke out. Danika Mason, a reporter for Channel Nine, said she had “misjudged the situation” by drinking before going on live TV. She also blamed the altitude, the cold, and not eating dinner.”I want to take full responsibility; it’s not the standard I set for myself,” she stated again the next day, adding that she was “embarrassed.”
Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister, claimed he was “pro-Danika” and that there was “nothing to see here,” which made it sound like she had jet lag. As she talked about the sports events of the day, Mason stumbled over her words and talked about iguanas and the cost of coffee. The price of coffee here is good; it’s the price of coffee in the US that we’ll have to get used to. “I’m not sure about the iguanas. Where are we going with that one?” she asked on her trip to the breakfast TV show Today on Wednesday, reportedly in response to comments from the studio hosts.
She then struggled through the rest of her sports report, mixing up her words and the UK and the US, while studio anchor Karl Stefanovic could be seen giggling in the background.Stevanovic said without being asked, “Look, the cold weather is real.” “You can’t really move your lips.” Australians had diverse reactions to her social media videos of the story.Good for her; there’s nothing wrong with this. “She looks like she’s having a great time over there,” one person said on X. Another person said, “If it’s not a health issue, she should be fired right away—very unprofessional.”
