The so-called “incumbency curse” has not affected Labor’s Anthony Albanese, who was re-elected as prime minister of Australia by a landslide. The conservative Liberal-National alliance lost badly across the country, but Albanese’s centre-left administration will significantly expand its majority even if official vote counting won’t be completed for days.

After losing his seat of 24 years, Coalition leader Peter Dutton stated he took “full responsibility” for his party’s defeat and expressed regret to fellow Members of Parliament. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed excitement about strengthening their bilateral ties with Australia after the outcome.
