Citing security concerns, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation Wednesday night banning travel to the US from a number of nations. Afghanistan, Myanmar, also known as Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen are among the 12 nations whose citizens will be completely prohibited from entering the country.
Limited restrictions will apply to people from seven nations: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. The proclamation contains exclusions for lawful permanent residents, current visa holders, certain visa categories, and people whose admission benefits US national interests.
According to a White House official, the president ultimately decided whether to sign the proclamation following the antisemitic incident in Boulder, Colorado. He had been thinking about it before, but the attack on Sunday accelerated it. However, Egypt was not on the list of prohibited nations, although the attacker was an Egyptian national.
White House deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson tweeted on X, “President Trump is keeping his promise to protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors who want to come to our country and cause us harm.
