The former US president’s health problems during his time in the White House have come back into focus as Joe Biden announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Biden’s office said in a statement on Sunday that the 82-year-old was diagnosed on Friday after seeing a physician for symptoms related to his urinary system.
That the aggressive kind of cancer, which has spread to his bones, was not discovered sooner has surprised several medical professionals. Others brought out the fact that men over 70 are not regularly checked for cancer and that the disease can spread quickly without the patient showing any signs.
On Monday, President Donald Trump told reporters that his predecessor should have been more open with the people, perhaps implying without providing proof.
Biden, who was 81 when he stood for reelection, is accused by Republicans of being mentally and physically unable to serve as president. Following a terrible debate performance against Trump last summer, he withdrew from the campaign.
According to the new book Original Sin by journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, in his last year in office, Biden was unable to identify Hollywood star and Democratic supporter George Clooney or remember the names of important aides.
There were internal discussions about putting the president in a wheelchair. Still, they couldn’t do so until after the election,” the authors wrote, referring to Biden’s physical decline, which was most noticeable in his halting walk.
