Britain Authorises London Luton Airport’s Expansion

On Thursday, the British government authorised the construction of a new terminal at London’s Luton Airport, allowing the capital’s fourth busiest airport to handle about 80% more passengers.

Accelerating the planning process to deliver new energy and transport projects is at the core of the growth strategy of the British Labour administration, which was elected in July. The government has already supported expansion at London’s larger Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Luton, 35 miles north of London, intends to increase its yearly passenger volume from the current 18 million to 32 million by 2043 by adding a terminal building, enlarging its current facilities, and constructing new taxiways. According to a government-published planning decision document, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander believes there is a “compelling case” for authorising the project.

EasyJet, Wizz Air, and Jet2 are among the airlines that use Luton, a leisure airport that transports vacationers to European locations. The airport welcomed Alexander’s decision, which said it would boost the British economy by an extra 1.5 billion pounds annually and create up to 11,000 jobs. Alexander disregarded the environmental concerns raised by planning officials, who suggested that she halt the development.
