Can an Indian Nurse on Death Row be Spared from Yemen’s Planned Execution?

Campaigners trying to free an Indian nurse on death row in war-torn Yemen have told the BBC that the nurse’s execution is scheduled for July 16. For the 2017 murder of a local man, Talal Abdo Mahdi, her former business partner, whose dismembered body was found in a water tank, Nimisha Priya received a death sentence.

She can only be spared if Mahdi’s family forgives her. Mahdi’s family has been promised $1 million (£735,000) in diyah, or blood money, by her fans and family. According to a Save Nimisha Priya Council member, “We are still waiting for their pardon or any other demands,” the BBC said.

The Director General of Prosecution has informed prison officials of the execution date. We’re still working on her rescue. However, in the end, the family must consent to forgiveness,” stated Babu John, a council member and social activist. The BBC was informed by an official in India’s Ministry of External Affairs that they were still verifying the information.

In 2008, Nimisha Priya left Kerala, a state in southern India, to work as a nurse in Yemen. When Mahdi’s body was found in 2017, she was taken into custody. The 34-year-old is currently being held at Yemen’s capital, Sanaa Central Jail. She was accused of giving Mahdi a “overdose of sedatives” and slicing up his corpse to murder him.
