After serving as the head of the ruling Liberals for nine years, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that he will stand down but remain in his position until the party selects a successor. At a press conference, Trudeau said that parliament would be halted until March 24 following intense pressure from Liberal lawmakers to resign, as polls indicate the party would lose the next election.
Thus, when Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, assumes office on January 20, Trudeau will remain prime minister. Tariffs that would destroy Canada’s economy are what Trump has threatened to implement. Following a thorough, national competitive process to choose the party’s next leader, I plan to step down as prime minister and party leader,” Trudeau stated. “It has become evident to me that I cannot be the best candidate in the upcoming election if I am fighting internal conflicts. This country needs a true choice.
Having been elected twice, Trudeau, 53, became one of Canada’s longest-serving prime ministers after taking office in November 2015. However, two years ago, public ire over exorbitant costs and a lack of available houses caused his popularity to decline.
Opposition parties had promised to overthrow the administration as soon as possible, perhaps by the end of March, and Parliament was scheduled to reconvene on January 27. The earliest they could introduce a motion of non-confidence, however, would be somewhere in May if parliament does not reconvene until March 24. Up until recently, Trudeau has been able to ward off Liberal lawmakers who were concerned about the low polling and the loss of safe seats in two special elections held last year.
