A two-week ceasefire deal to halt the war in Iran appeared to be in jeopardy after Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz again in response to Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and US President Donald Trump said American forces would remain “in place” until the Islamic Republic fully complied with the “real” ceasefire agreement.
The latest events in the battle came after the US and Iran both declared victory after reaching a two-week truce agreement on Tuesday night, but new bloodshed in Lebanon threatened to jeopardize the accord. Iranian media declared the closure of the Strait of Hormuz again on Wednesday, citing Israeli attacks on Tehran-backed Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.
According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, an end to the war in Lebanon was part of the 10-point plan outlined in the ceasefire agreement, a claim that both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have denied.
The world sees the massacres in Lebanon,” Araghchi wrote in a post on X. “The ball is in the US court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments.”In an early Thursday morning social media tweet, Trump stated that the increase of US warships and troops will remain around Iran “until such time as the real agreement reached is fully complied with.” If it is not, which is quite improbable, then the ‘Shootin’ Starts,’ larger, better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before,” Trump tweeted.
