Hong Kong — China has imposed a ban on exports of certain rare earth elements and other materials to Japan that could be used for military purposes. The move has added to tensions between the two countries, following recent comments by Japan’s prime minister about Taiwan.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday that the restrictions apply to a wide range of so called dual use items, meaning goods and technologies that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. The ban took effect immediately.
Although the ministry did not list specific products, its official catalogue of dual-use items includes rare earth elements, advanced electronics, aerospace and aviation parts, drones, and nuclear-related technology.
Rare earth elements play a key role in many industries. They are used in consumer electronics, vehicles, and advanced defence equipment, including fighter jets. It is still unclear how much the new restrictions will affect Japan’s industries.
Relations between China and Japan have worsened in recent months. In November, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told parliament that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would pose a serious threat to Japan’s security and could require a military response.
