While the move weakens Beijing’s position in the region, some voices on Chinese social media are presenting it as a possible model for how the United States might one day act toward Taiwan.
In the hours before his arrest, Maduro was meeting China’s top envoy to Latin America, Qiu Xiaoqi, at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas. During the meeting, he openly praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing him as a trusted and supportive leader. The interaction highlighted the close political bond between the two countries.
Soon after, US special forces carried out a nighttime operation in the Venezuelan capital, removing Maduro from power. The sudden turn of events left China facing the loss of one of its most loyal allies in the region.
China and Venezuela have maintained strong ties for decades, rooted in shared political views and a common mistrust of U.S.-Led global influence. In 2023, the two nations strengthened their relationship through an “all-weather strategic partnership,” expanding economic support and diplomatic cooperation.
China has been a key destination for Venezuelan oil exports and has invested heavily in infrastructure and development projects, lending billions of dollars over the years. Maduro’s removal now raises uncertainty over China’s access to Venezuelan energy resources and its broader political and economic role in Latin America.
