Customers are Offering Refunds as Low-Cost Airline Jetstar Asia Closes in a Few Weeks

Budget airline Jetstar Asia, located in Singapore, will shut operations at the end of July. Passengers who are impacted will receive complete refunds. High airport fees, growing supplier prices, and heightened competition in the area have all presented challenges for the low-cost carrier. Over 500 workers will lose their jobs. Australia-based Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Japan would not be affected by the closure of Jetstar Asia, according to Qantas, the airline’s co-owner.

Over the course of the following seven weeks, the low-cost airline will gradually restrict its operations, and passengers will be informed if their journey is impacted. The airline will get in touch with passengers who have tickets to travel after the closure on July 31.

Some impacted passengers could be transferred to other Qantas Group aircraft. Jetstar Asia advises customers who made reservations via a separate airline or travel agency to get in touch with them directly. The stoppage will affect 16 routes around Asia, including flights from Singapore to Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Australia’s main airline will have A$500 million ($325.9 million; £241.4 million) to invest in updating its fleet of aircraft thanks to the shutdown of Qantas’ low-cost division. Additionally, 13 aircraft will be redeployed for flights throughout Australia and New Zealand. In a statement, Qantas Group Chief Executive Vanessa Hudson stated, “We have seen some of Jetstar Asia’s supplier costs increase by up to 200%, which has materially changed its cost base.”
