Danish Police Detained Activist Greta Thunberg During a Pro-Palestinian Demonstration

Activist Greta Thunberg was arrested by Danish police on Wednesday during a protest in Copenhagen against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza War, according to a representative for the event’s organisers. Later, according to Danish media reports, Thunberg was freed from custody; the daily Ekstra Bladet published video of her leaving a police station.

A police spokesperson stated without mentioning specific detainees that six people had been taken into custody at Copenhagen University after roughly twenty people barricaded the entrance to a building and three people went inside.

Known for her efforts to stop climate change caused by humans, Swedish-born Thunberg has been supporting the Palestinian cause more and more. In May, she stated that these protests “should be everywhere.”

In a video released by the pro-Palestinian student organisation Students Against the Occupation, uniformed police officers were seen handcuffing or tying their hands behind their backs as they led Thunberg and other detainees into a police van.  As a standard symbol among pro-Palestinian protestors, Thunberg wore a scarf around her shoulders that bore the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh pattern.
