Law enforcement sources report that an explosion at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Biscailuz Training Center in East Los Angeles killed at least three officers on Friday. The explosion took place at the Eastern Avenue center, which houses the bomb squad and the sheriff’s special enforcement department. It happened at around 7:30 a.m.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna stated during a press conference on Friday morning that the three officers were all from the arson explosives division and had between 19 and 33 years of experience with the agency. At the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, this is regrettably the biggest death toll since 1857, Luna stated.
Two law enforcement sources said the incident happened as deputies were relocating an unexploded device that had just been recovered during a bomb callout. The probe is still underway, the sources emphasized.
The Times was first informed by law enforcement sources that a fourth person had been hurt, but Luna stated on Friday morning that no other injuries had been reported. Although the identities of the three deputies who were slain are unknown, Luna claimed to have had conversations with two of their families.
