Several heads of state and diplomats attended the international gathering as the 23rd edition of the Doha Forum got underway on Saturday in the capital of Qatar. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani’s introductory remarks reflected this year’s theme, “Justice in Action: Beyond Promises to Progress,” which is about putting ideas into action.
Al Thani opened the discussion by saying, “Only just solutions can create lasting peace and prevent the perpetuation of conflict and division. The agony of the Palestinian people in blatant violations of international law, and the awful events unfolding in Sudan, such as massacres and grave human rights abuses, all point out that achieving justice and defending rights are indispensable conditions for keeping the region’s stability and preventing its disintegration,” he stated.
The widening gap between the Global North and South is another important issue this year. Mubarak Ajlan Al-Kuwari, the Executive Director of the Forum, told Euronews that many of the disparities that exist today are a result of institutions that were created without everyone participating.
