As Kiev gets ready to conduct a significant military parade that is anticipated to be visited by foreign leaders, including China’s Xi Jinping, Ukraine launched a second night in a row of drone attacks against Moscow, briefly stopping flights at four airports in the Russian capital and nine more.
One night after Russian air defences shot down four drones near the city, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced in a Telegram post on Tuesday that at least 19 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight as they approached the capital.
Debris from fallen drones fell on a major highway, but there were no initial reports of significant damage or injuries, according to Sobyanin. Russian aviation officials said that four of the capital’s airports had grounded flights as a safety measure.
According to a Kremlin statement on Sunday, the most recent Ukrainian strike on the Russian capital occurs just before Xi is scheduled to arrive in Moscow on Wednesday for a three-day official visit during which the Chinese leader will participate in Friday’s May 9 Victory Day festivities. Other leaders are anticipated to attend, including Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko, Vietnamese President To Lam, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
