In reaction to “highly provocative” remarks made by a top Russian official, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines.
In light of the extremely provocative remarks made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, I have directed two nuclear submarines to be stationed in the relevant areas, in case these inflammatory and stupid remarks turn out to be more than that,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Words have great power and frequently have unexpected repercussions; hopefully, this will not be one of those times. Trump did not specify if he was referring to submarines with nuclear propulsion or armaments. He also didn’t go into detail about the sites, which the US military keeps under wraps.
Washington maintains nuclear-armed submarines on patrol as part of its so-called nuclear triad of land, sea, and air-launched missiles, while the United States and Russia hold the great bulk of the world’s nuclear weapons. Trump made no explicit reference to Medvedev’s remarks that sparked the extremely uncommon nuclear saber-rattling performance in public.
Trump’s warning of more penalties against Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine was sharply denounced by Medvedev on Monday. Posting on X, he accused Trump of “playing the ultimatum game,” saying that Trump “should remember” that Russia was a powerful country.
