Why are There Large-Scale Demonstrations in Iran, And is the United States Able to Step in?

In the midst of the fatal turmoil, authorities implemented a continuous communications ban on Thursday that, according to experts, is unprecedented in its scope and has mostly cut off the nation from the outside world.

If security forces use force against demonstrators, hundreds of whom are reportedly dead, US President Donald Trump has vowed to invade Iran. There have been thousands more arrests. About two weeks ago, protests against high inflation began in Tehran’s bazaars. Since then, they have expanded to more than 180 cities and towns nationwide, evolving into widespread demonstrations against the regime.

When the cost of necessities like chicken and cooking oil skyrocketed and certain items completely disappeared from stores, worries about inflation reached a breaking point. The central bank’s decision to terminate a scheme that gave certain importers access to US dollars at lower prices than the rest of the market made matters worse. The protests were sparked by store owners raising their prices and even closing their doors.
