How Suspicions of an Immigration Raid at a Hardware Shop Caused a Commotion in Los Angeles

In the parking lot of a hardware shop outside of Los Angeles, where demonstrations against US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown had broken out, Juan and a few pals congregated. Dozens of day workers, many of them are undocumented immigrants, usually attend such meetings in hopes of finding employment with contractors or shoppers.

However, on Sunday, just two tiny pickups outside this Home Depot location in the Paramount suburb—where over 82% of the population is Hispanic—advertised that they could assist with roofing, repairs, or painting. Rumours that day that day that workers here had been detained and picked up led to the business becoming the focal point of immigration protests.

Numerous residents reported to the BBC that they had seen immigration enforcement cars nearby. It sparked terror and anxiety at once. Reports then surfaced of raids and arrests of day workers at Home Depot, a job site frequented by many illegal migrants in the United States.

In this city with a large Hispanic population, protests broke out and turned violent as rocks and Molotov bombs were hurled. To calm the mob, authorities employed smoke bombs, rubber bullets, and pepper spray. However, it seems that the protests in Paramount were sparked by false information.
