Eight people were killed and seven injured after a fire broke out at a retirement community outside of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, on Monday.
About thirty individuals were inside when the fire started at 3:30 am (02:30 GMT), according to Luka Causic, a police officer in charge of the emergency response. According to Causic, preliminary evidence indicated that the fire might have been caused by a resident.
There is suspicion that this fire was caused by one of the residents, but the investigation will establish all the details,” Causic stated to AFP. According to an AFP reporter, a significant section of the building’s roof was clearly burnt as firefighters and emergency personnel swept the area after the fire.
The survivors are evacuated by emergency personnel from a burned-out nursing home in the village of Barajevo, outside of Belgrade. Reuters Despite the facility’s distant location, Serbian officials later commended the local fire crews for their prompt response.
Regretfully, the fire claimed the lives of eight people. Labour Minister Nemanja Starovic told local media, “I must say that members of the emergency response sector reacted very promptly and successfully rescued, or rather evacuated, 13 people.
Rescue personnel had earlier reported the deaths of at least six persons. Starovic added, “I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” and that an investigation had been started.
