Elections in Bangladesh are Scheduled for late 2025 or Early 2026

General elections are scheduled for late next year or early 2026, according to a statement made Monday by Muhammad Yunus, the temporary leader of Bangladesh’s caretaker administration, which was put in place following a revolution in August.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus, who was named the nation’s “chief adviser” following the student-led rebellion that overthrew former Premier Sheikh Hasina, has been under increasing pressure to announce a date.

The 84-year-old microfinance pioneer is in charge of a transitional government that will attempt to address the “extremely tough” task of reestablishing democratic institutions in the roughly 170 million-person South Asian country. Election dates could be fixed by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026,” he stated during a state television program.

Setting an election date is contingent upon the agreement of political parties, and Yunus has appointed commissions to supervise a number of measures he claims are necessary.” Throughout, I have emphasised that reforms should take place first before the arrangements for an election,” he stated.

“If the political parties agree to hold the election on an earlier date with minimum reforms, such as having a flawless voter list, the election could be held… by the end of 2025,” he stated.
