Ashley St Clair, who has a child with Elon Musk, has filed a lawsuit against his artificial intelligence company xAI, accusing it of creating sexualised deepfake images of her on the social media platform X.
The lawsuit, filed in New York on Thursday, claims that Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, generated sexually explicit images of Ms. St. Clair. xAI, which owns both X and Grok, has responded by filing a countersuit, alleging that Ms. St. Clair breached the platform’s terms of service.
Ms. St. Clair’s lawyer, Carrie Goldberg, told BBC News that the case is intended to hold the company accountable and set clear legal limits on the use of artificial intelligence. She said the creation of non-consensual sexual images makes the product unsafe and harmful, adding that AI tools should not be used to target or abuse women and girls.
According to court documents, X users used photos of Ms. St. Clair taken when she was 14 years old and asked Grok to alter them by removing clothing or placing her in a bikini. The filing alleges that the AI complied with these requests.
