Before a meeting in Geneva on Friday, European foreign ministers will inform their Iranian counterpart that the United States is amenable to direct negotiations, even though the US is contemplating supporting Israeli strikes aimed at destroying Tehran’s nuclear capability.
Two diplomats told Reuters that Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister, will be informed that Iran has to provide a “clear signal,” as pressure mounts on Tehran to agree to strict nuclear program restrictions to avert the possible creation of an atomic bomb. Prior to the Geneva summit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with a number of Western peers, suggesting his willingness to meet directly with Tehran.
Despite a US official was reported by broadcaster CNN as suggesting that President Donald Trump favoured allied diplomacy that may move Iran closer to an agreement, Washington did not confirm that.
But Tehran has stated time and again that it would not engage with the Trump administration unless Israeli attacks stop. The E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) ministers and the head of the European Union’s foreign policy were holding separate meetings before their scheduled in-person meetings with Araqchi.
A European ambassador said, “We can sit down with the Americans, while the Iranians cannot.” “We will tell them to come back to the table to discuss the nuclear issue until the worst-case scenario, while raising our worries over its missile defence, support to Russia and detention of our citizens.
