Image: Reuters After its flight attendants’ union issued a 72-hour strike notice on Wednesday, threatening a walkout while contract negotiations over a salary settlement stagnate, Air Canada is getting ready to suspend the majority of its flights.
Hours after the airline requested that Ottawa intervene, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents over 10,000 cabin staff members at the nation’s biggest carrier, launched the action. About 130,000 customers would be impacted daily by the interruption, according to Air Canada, which also promised that passengers would receive a complete refund for any flights that were canceled during the peak summer months.
As the airline gets ready to shut down operations for the next three days, the strike may affect some of its most profitable flights connecting Canada, the US, Europe, and Asia. A protracted job strike may result in competitor airlines raising ticket costs and canceling flights. Additionally, 32 minutes after the strike, the airline announced a lockdown. On Tuesday, it announced that discussions had reached a standstill after the union turned down its request for legally binding arbitration.
