Following an anti-corruption raid on his residence, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the resignation of Andriy Yermak, his chief of staff. Zelensky’s closest advisor during Russia’s full-scale conflict has been Yermak, a towering figure with great political clout. Despite not being charged with any wrongdoing, Yermak has come under increasing pressure due to a growing scandal.
Zelensky recently nominated him to conduct crucial talks, with US President Donald Trump spearheading a fresh effort to put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. We risk losing all of it: ourselves, Ukraine, our future,” Zelensky warned in a harsh speech to the country held outside his presidential office.
For weeks, the corruption scandal has rocked Ukraine, undermining Zelensky’s personal authority and endangering the nation’s sensitive negotiation position with the US. With the support of its European allies, Ukraine has attempted to modify the parameters of a US-led peace plan that was first thought to be excessively biased in favor of Russia.
The chief of staff said on social media that “from my side there is full co-operation” after Ukraine’s two anti-corruption authorities raided Yermak’s flat in Kyiv’s government quarters early on Friday.
The president of Ukraine stated, “I’m grateful to Andriy that Ukraine’s attitude on the negotiating route was always presented as needed it was always a patriotic position,” in his video speech in Kyiv.
