One of the key figures in the opposition to the Tehran dictatorship and the son of the last Iranian Shah, Reza Pahlavi, may shortly speak to members of the European Parliament.
The Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs has compiled a provisional list with his name on it in order to facilitate a discussion on the state of affairs in the nation. The list, which Euronews obtained, is tentative and will be verified on Wednesday afternoon.
It includes seven individuals, including Shirin Ebadi, a lawyer and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, as well as leaders of other groups and parties that are hostile to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, the 7 Aban Front, and the communist Tudeh Party. In order to symbolically symbolize Iranian opposition leaders who are unable to participate in the discussion, one seat will be left vacant.
The purpose of the list, according to those who spoke to Euronews, is to prevent Pahlavi from being singled out as the only opposition leader the Parliament believes is worth speaking with. In recent years, the Parliament has expressed interest in engaging with Shas’s son, but with caution, since legislators in Brussels have recognized that it is not the European Union’s role to support particular candidates; rather, Iranians should select their own leaders.
