In an effort to improve the capabilities of its technology, Meta claims it is purchasing the Chinese-founded AI company Manus. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg experts speculated that the acquisition would be valued at over $2 billion (£1.48 billion).
By providing users with access to “agents” tools that can perform complex tasks with minimal user input, such as organizing travel or creating presentations, Meta claimed the agreement will help advance its AI. According to a blog post, “Manus’s outstanding talent will join Meta’s team to deliver general-purpose agents across our consumer and business products, including Meta AI.
Analyst Barton Crockett of Rosenblatt Securities told Reuters that it was a “natural fit” for Meta, aligning with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “vision of personal AI” through agents. Manus, which is based in Singapore after relocating from China, has sought to differentiate itself from competing AI firms by claiming to create a “truly autonomous” agent.
Manus claims that its service can autonomously plan, execute, and complete tasks according to instructions, unlike many chatbots that require multiple requests before a user receives an appropriate response.
