The use of sexist and disparaging words to characterize protesters at a comedian’s performance by France’s first lady, Brigitte Macron, has infuriated French feminists and celebrities.
Ary Abittan, a stand-up comedian who was accused of rape by a former lover in 2021, was performing on Sunday, and Brigitte Macron was there. The case was rejected after a three-year investigation, and French courts subsequently upheld the decision.
The comedian claims he is “scared” of demonstrators who disrupt his performances in a pre-show interview with Brigitte Macron that was caught on camera and briefly posted online.
The comedian’s Saturday night performance was disrupted by activists from the French feminist organization #NousToutes, many of whom wore masks featuring his image. On social media, French feminists and celebrities quickly adopted the slur and joined forces with victims of sexual abuse.
On her Instagram account, Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard posted a black photo with the words “je suis une sale conne,” which translates to “I’m a stupid b*tch.” The French actress, who won an Oscar for her role as Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose” in 2008, wrote “et fête de l’état,” or “and proud of it,” as the description for the photo.
