They were some of the first kindergarteners at the New Indian Model School in Dubai in 1980. After 45 years, the friendship between these nine ladies from the United Arab Emirates remained strong despite time, distance, and the inevitable ups and downs of life. Despite living in separate places and leading very different lives, the group, who graduated from school as the 1993 class, made it a point to get together at least once a month.
Abu Dhabi-based project manager Manisha Pillai frequently sparks these meetings. The others rush to meet her whenever she travels to Dubai. Their reunions aren’t your typical get-togethers; they’re colourful parties that feature colour-coordinated attire and continuous storytelling sessions that make them laugh like schoolgirls.
We are in our late forties now, but when we get together, it’s like we’re in school again,” Dubai-based businessman Raji Shams told Khaleej Times. No matter how much time has passed, we don’t simply re-connect; we continue where we left off.
Playground activities, private journal entries, and the carefree joy of youth founded their friendship. Dance recitals, tutoring sessions, and amicable competitions over scrapbooks showcasing their favourite celebrities characterized their formative years.
