Following crucial negotiations with Ukraine’s supporters known as the “Coalition of the Willing” in Paris, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared on Tuesday that his nation might contribute militarily to a possible settlement in Ukraine.
The Chancellor stated that he was not ruling out any possibilities and that this may involve, for instance, deploying forces on NATO territory that borders Ukraine following a truce. In contrast, the United Kingdom and France pledged to “establish military bases across Ukraine” in order to prevent future incursions after reaching a peace deal.
Merz did not support this strategy, but his comments were criticized because many media outlets interpreted them as implying that the Bundeswehr might be deployed to Ukraine after a peace agreement.
The real mandate of the protection force that Germany wishes to join is unknown. According to Pellmann, “there is a genuine risk of escalation in a security arrangement based only on NATO troops, as they could find themselves in direct conflict with Russia in a crisis.”
This was “not the right path” in his opinion. Instead, real UN peacekeepers who are approved by both Russia and Ukraine are required. Troops from neutral nations and the BRICS states should make up the majority of any UN peacekeeping effort. Only that would provide the Ukrainian people with a reliable assurance of peace.
