Reports of Defective Door Handles Have Prompted a Government Safety Investigation on Tesla

A complaint on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website states that the agency is investigating claims that 2021 Tesla Model Y SUVs’ defective electronic door handles made it impossible for owners to get in and out of the cars. Several times, parents report instances where they couldn’t get to their kids in the car.

Of the nine reports of “inoperable door handles” that were sent to the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), the most frequent ones concerned parents’ incapacity to get back into the car after putting their child in the back seat before driving or to get them out of the back seat after driving.

The NHTSA data show that some Tesla owners said they had to smash a car window to get back in. PE25010 is the NHTSA number for the preliminary examination, and it is available for viewing.

In an emergency, such as when kids are trapped in a hot car, entrapment in a vehicle is very dangerous. According to the agency, NHTSA has a Child Heatstroke Campaign to raise awareness of the risks to kids confined in hot cars. According to the safety watchdog, even though Tesla cars have internal manual door releases, little children cannot operate them.
