Authorities informed the BBC that at least five people were murdered after gunmen opened fire on a group of domestic tourists who were visiting a well-known tourist destination in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The incident happened in Pahalgam, a charming Himalayan town that is sometimes referred to as the “Switzerland of India.” The attack was described as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years” by Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of the area. According to reports, there are a lot more casualties than have been verified thus far.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India declared that the offenders will “be brought to justice. In a statement posted on X, Modi said, “Our determination to combat terrorism is unwavering and will only grow stronger.
Modi also announced that Amit Shah, the home minister, will visit Srinagar, the biggest city in Kashmir, to attend an urgent meeting. Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of the area, reported that police and the army had been dispatched to the scene.
The incident has not been attributed to any group. Although violence has decreased recently, the Muslim-majority area has been experiencing an insurgency since 1989. Inspector General Vidi Kumar Birdi of the Jammu and Kashmir Police told BBC Hindi that cars cannot get to the scene of the incident. Chaos erupted following the unexpected attack, according to a Gujarati visitor who was among the group that was fired upon. Everyone began to flee, weep, and yell.
