Hamas has handed over to the Red Cross in northern Gaza a coffin it says contains the body of an Israeli hostage, according to the Israeli military. The remains have been transferred to Israeli forces and will be taken to the National Centre of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv for identification.
Earlier, Hamas’s armed wing said it had recovered the body of an Israeli soldier in the eastern Shejaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City. The search operation was conducted with permission from Israel, which allowed Hamas members and Red Cross staff to enter an area still under Israeli military control.
The Israeli government has accused Hamas of intentionally slowing down the process of recovering the bodies of deceased hostages since a ceasefire took effect more than three weeks ago. Hamas has maintained that locating remains has been challenging due to extensive damage and debris.
Under the US-brokered ceasefire deal that began on 10 October, Hamas agreed to hand over 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 others within 72 hours. All surviving Israeli hostages were released on 13 October in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza.
