Senior representatives from Israel, the United States, and regional nations are set to arrive Wednesday to advance peace talks in Gaza after Hamas sent over its names of hostages and Palestinian detainees for release in an exchange.
Delegations were increasing their presence at the negotiations, which were held Monday in a beach resort in the Red Sea of Egypt, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point proposal now seems closer than any prior attempt to halt the bloodshed.
While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his close friend, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Trump sent his son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Together with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, the prime minister of longtime mediator Qatar, they were anticipated to attend the negotiations on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, it was anticipated that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will participate in parallel discussions with European and Arab ministers in Paris to deliberate about how to carry out Trump’s plan.
International support for the plan is widespread, but important issues including as the timeline, a post-war government for the Gaza Strip, what will happen to Hamas, and the likelihood of an independent Palestinian state have not yet been clarified.
