Harrods Claims an IT Incident Resulted in the Theft of Client Data

Customers have been alerted by luxury department store Harrods that there may have been an IT systems breach that compromised their personal information. It claimed that some online customers’ names and contact information had been stolen from a third-party provider’s servers. In an email sent to customers on Friday night, Harrods called the hack a “isolated incident” and stated that no payment information or passwords were stolen.

In a statement, it stated: “We are carefully collaborating with the third party to make sure that all necessary measures are being taken, and they have confirmed that this is an isolated event that has been contained. All pertinent authorities have been informed. According to a business spokesperson, the breach had nothing to do with a cyberattack that occurred in May, when the company blocked internet access on all of its websites as a preventative step after someone tried to access its systems without authorization.

The hackers who claimed credit for that cyberattack were part of a loosely affiliated group that also claimed responsibility for high-profile attacks on the Co-op and Marks & Spencer earlier this year. Four persons were detained by the National Crime Agency in July in relation to the hacks. Three lads, ages 17 to 19, were arrested in London and the West Midlands, while a 20-year-old woman was apprehended in Staffordshire. Since then, everyone has been freed on bail.
