The CEO of global ports operator DP World has resigned under rising pressure over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem’s departure as chairman and CEO comes after newly leaked documents revealed that the Emirati entrepreneur exchanged hundreds of emails with Epstein over a decade.
Being listed in the files does not indicate any crime, and the BBC has contacted Sulayem for comment. DP World announced his resignation “effective immediately” on Friday, designating Essa Kazim as chairman and Yuvraj Narayan as CEO. A photo of Sulayem appears to have been taken from the website.
DP World, the Dubai-owned logistics behemoth that operates port facilities on six continents and plays an important role in global trade infrastructure, has come under increased pressure in recent days from enterprises with which it collaborates.
Earlier this week, the UK development financing agency and Canada’s second largest pension fund, La Caisse, announced that they were stopping fresh investment in the company. Sulayem’s involvement in the Prince of Wales’ Earthshot project, which received funds from DP World, prompted the UK Charity Commission to investigate.
