How the Secret Service’s Unequal Quest for Accountability Sprang from a Near-Assassination

A year after Donald Trump’s near-assassination, the Secret Service is very frustrated with how the agency handled the security lapses that day. A dozen federal law enforcement officials and congressmen, both current and retired, have told CNN that there is a general lack of accountability, particularly for top Secret Service personnel and the agents in Trump’s detail at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July.

The highest-ranking agent on Trump’s detail that day, Sean Curran, has now been elevated to the position of director of the Secret Service. Communication problems with local police who noticed the gunman and challenged him on a neighbouring roof before he aimed at Trump were among the numerous failings discovered by a number of federal studies and congressional probes, as well as the Secret Service’s own review.

Under fire for the security failings, Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service’s then-director, resigned ten days after the protest. Since then, just six Secret Service employees have received short-term, unpaid suspensions or other forms of discipline; this choice has felt contradictory to many inside the organisation.
