Iceland Rewards Those Who Report Shoplifters With £1

In an attempt to combat the growing rates of retail theft, Iceland, a supermarket chain, will pay consumers who report shoplifting crimes. Customers who notify employees of a theft in progress will earn a £1 credit on their Iceland Bonus Card, according to Richard Walker, executive chairman of the company.

According to the corporation, stealing costs them about £20 million annually. According to Mr. Walker, this number not only affects the company’s financial performance but also restricts its capacity to lower prices and reinvest in employee salaries. Iceland informed the BBC that although the shoplifters must be reported and vetted, they do not necessarily need to be caught for customers to get the £1 prize.

“We’re encouraging our loyal customers to help sound the alarm, and if they do help to catch a shoplifter, we’ll top up their Bonus Card to spend in store,” the statement said. On Thursday, he initially announced the news on Channel 5 News.

This is not a victimless crime, despite what some people believe. It entails aggression and intimidation, and it costs the company money in terms of the hours we pay our employees,” he added.
