Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, has issued a warning that Washington may raise secondary duties on India. He stated that the choice would be contingent upon the results of Friday’s meeting between Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump in Alaska.
Secondary taxes have been imposed on Indians who purchase Russian oil. And I could imagine that secondary tariffs or sanctions may increase if things don’t work out,” Bessent stated in a Wednesday interview with Bloomberg TV. Trump levied 25% tariffs and a 25% penalty on India earlier this month for purchasing weapons and oil from Russia.
Trump threatened “severe consequences” on Wednesday if Moscow rejected a peace agreement, which the US has been attempting to arbitrate between Russia and Ukraine. On Friday, Trump and Putin will meet in Anchorage to talk about ways to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
The Europeans are sulking over how and what President Trump should do at his meeting with President Putin. We must impose similar measures on the Europeans as well. The Europeans must impose these secondary sanctions,” Bessent stated.
