In Istanbul, Syrian Leader Sharaa Joins Turkish President Erdogan

Amid attempts by the new Damascus-based government to reconstruct the war-torn nation, Syria’s interim leader met with Turkey’s president in Istanbul on Saturday. Ankara is a strong backer of the new government in Syria, which overthrew long-standing tyrant Bashar al-Assad in December and is working to lift sanctions and restore the nation’s economy and infrastructure following nearly 14 years of civil conflict.

Ahead of a meeting that private Turkish news outlet NTV reported lasted more than two and a half hours, the two leaders were spotted exchanging greetings outside Erdogan’s office.

The Syrian president said on Telegram that the Syrian team, which comprised its foreign and defence ministries, will “discuss a number of common issues” with the Turkish side. According to Anadolu, the director of the national military industry agency, Turkey’s intelligence chief, and the country’s foreign and defence ministries also participated.

The new government has been trying to improve ties with the West and lift sanctions since Assad was overthrown, but some nations have been reluctant, citing the Islamist history of key players.
