In September, Sales of Electric Vehicles Reached a Record High

According to the most recent industry data, sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK reached a new high last month. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT), sales of plug-in hybrid automobiles increased even more quickly in September than sales of pure battery electric vehicles (BEV), which increased by nearly a third to 72,779 units.

This indicates that last month, almost half of all new car registrations in the UK were for completely electric or hybrid vehicles. According to the SMMT, the launch of the government’s grant program, a wider selection of models, and discounts from automakers were the main factors driving sales.

Although the number of BEV registrations increased last month, enterprises or fleets purchased the vast majority of them (71.4%). The SMMT reported that more than one in five (22.1%) of the new cars registered so far in 2025 are now zero-emission vehicles, despite the fact that the number of individual buyers of completely electric cars has increased over the last year.

Mike Hawes, the CEO of SMMT, claimed that electric cars were “powering market growth after a sluggish summer”. He claimed that, despite consumer demand being “trailing ambition,” industry investment in electric vehicles was “paying off.
