Rescue workers at the scene said that at least 30 dead have been found from a building at the scene of a jet accident in Ahmedabad, in western India. Rescuers reported that other persons were trapped inside.
Minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad in western India, an Air India jet carrying 242 passengers headed for London crashed on Thursday, according to the company and authorities. India’s federal health minister said that “many people” were dead. According to Air India, the aircraft was its route to Gatwick Airport in Britain; however, authorities said that it crashed in a residential neighbourhood close to the airport.
A senior police officer said, “We have cleared about 70 to 80 percent of the area and will clear the remaining portion shortly. The building on which it crashed is a doctors’ hostel. 217 adults and 11 children were among the 242 individuals, a source told Reuters. According to Air India, 169 of them were Indian, 53 were British, seven were Portuguese, and one was Canadian.
According to aviation tracking website Flightradar24, the aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of the newest passenger planes in operation. “We are still gathering information and will provide more updates,” Air India stated on X. The injured are being treated at the closest hospitals.
