Following a string of events that disrupted the air earlier this week, drones have been spotted close to military installations, including the biggest in Denmark. Among other airbases, Karup was forced to temporarily block commercial traffic from its airspace when the devices were spotted over it. There have also been reports of possible sightings in Lithuania, Norway, and Germany.
It is the most recent in a series of dubious drone operations in Denmark, which has sparked worries about possible Russian participation and the country’s susceptibility to aerial attacks. Although Danish officials warned that they had no proof that Moscow was responsible, they said Thursday’s assaults seemed to be a “hybrid attack.” Duty officer Simon Skelsjaer told news agency AFP that the event on Friday lasted for many hours and began at approximately 20:15 local time (18:15 GMT).
He added that police were working with the Danish military in their inquiry and that they were unable to remark on the origin of the drones because they had not shot them down. According to Skelsjaer, no commercial flights were scheduled in the vicinity at the time, therefore the brief closure of civil airspace over the facility had no effect. Drones were seen close to many military locations overnight, according to the Danish Defense Ministry, however it did not identify which ones. It declared it will not provide any more comments.
