In the UK, One Out of Ten Automobiles is Manufactured in China

According to the most recent industry statistics, one out of every ten automobiles sold in the UK in June were manufactured in China. In the UK, new Chinese businesses like BYD, Jaecoo, and Omoda are expanding quickly.

Over the past several months, there has been a noticeable increase, coinciding with the majority of other G7 nations imposing substantial additional taxes on their imports. According to the most recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 18,944 vehicles manufactured by Chinese-owned companies, such as MG and Polestar, were sold in June, accounting for 10% of total UK sales. This represents an increase from 6% in the same month last year.

More than 8%, or one in twelve, of the automobiles sold in the first half of this year were Chinese, up from 5% in 2023 and 2024. Mostly, but not entirely, they were electric cars.

In contrast, a survey conducted by Jato Analytics indicated that Chinese brands accounted for 4.3% of the EU market in the first five months of this year, compared to just 1.6% in Germany and 2.7% in France. At 9.2%, Spain was higher, though. Felipe Munoz, its analyst, stated: “The popularity of electric cars and the fact that the UK has not implemented tariffs present a significant opportunity for the Chinese.
