India and the US Want to Make pProgress in Their Daylong Trade Negotiations

There is optimism that delayed bilateral agreement discussions will soon resume as India and the US convene a day of trade talks. In Delhi, a group headed by US trade negotiator Brendan Lynch is meeting with representatives of India’s commerce ministry.

India described the meeting as a “discussion” about “trying to see” how an agreement can be reached and stated that it does not signal the beginning of the next round of negotiations.

After US President Donald Trump levied a high 50% tax on Indian exports, in part as retaliation for Delhi’s acquisition of Russian weapons and energy, trade negotiations had come to a standstill. India has labelled the rates “unfair” and justified its move by pointing to its own energy demands.

Relationships between the allies have rapidly and unexpectedly deteriorated as a result of the heavy responsibilities and harsh criticism of India by Trump and his top aides. The tariffs have already affected production and livelihoods in India, a key exporter of items to the US, including clothing, shrimp, gems, and jewelry.

Rajesh Agrawal, who is spearheading the talks on India’s behalf, told local media on Monday ahead of Mr. Lynch’s visit, “This is not an official round of negotiations, but it will definitely be a discussion on the trade talks and on attempting to see how we can achieve an agreement between India and the US.
