India’s prime minister has paid tribute to Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, who was killed in a plane crash in western India on Wednesday. Pawar was among five people who died when a chartered aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Baramati airport, located in his home constituency. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said visibility at the airport was poor at the time of the crash. India’s aviation regulator has launched an investigation to determine the cause.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Pawar’s death as “shocking and saddening” and praised his long service to the people of Maharashtra. Pawar’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday morning. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the loss “immeasurable” and announced three days of state mourning in his honour.
A senior and influential political figure, Pawar served as deputy chief minister in a coalition government with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The 66-year-old leader was widely known as “Dada,” a Marathi term meaning elder brother, reflecting the affection he received from party workers and the public alike.
