Instagram CEO Questioned During Trial for Social Media Addiction

In an ongoing trial, the CEO of Instagram has come to testify on whether his social media platform is purposefully addicting and harmful to its younger users. Instagram’s eight-year leader, Adam Mosseri, made an appearance Wednesday in a Los Angeles courtroom where a historic trial investigating the impact of YouTube and Instagram on mental health began this week.

Mosseri, a senior officer at Meta, the company that owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, will spend the entire day being questioned in court. Thus far, Meta’s attorneys have maintained that the primary plaintiff in the case, who goes by the initials K.M.G., was adversely affected by other aspects of her life rather than her Instagram usage. The trial, which began Monday and is anticipated to last six weeks, will test legal arguments aimed at establishing harm caused by social media to youth and holding internet companies responsible.

Thousands of other complaints have been filed against the firms by state prosecutors, school districts, and their families nationwide. Other well-known individuals expected to testify in the case include YouTube CEO Neal Mohan and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Prior to the trial, TikTok and Snapchat both struck settlements.
