Iran Detains Marathon Organizers for Allowing Women to Not Wear Headscarves

According to the Iranian judiciary, two marathon organizers were detained for permitting women who did not wear headscarves to participate. The action was taken in response to pictures of exposed women racing in the event that surfaced online on Friday.

The marathon was held on Kish Island off the southern coast of Iran, with 2,000 ladies and 3,000 men competing separately. Some of the female participants were obviously not wearing the hijab or any other head covering because they were dressed in red t-shirts.

The pictures were eagerly praised by many Iranian reformers as more proof that Iranian women are defying the clothing restrictions imposed by the government. Iranian officials have reacted to it as an intolerable challenge to the existing quo. The judiciary has swiftly acted against the organizers.

The country’s theocratic Islamic government has condemned the marathon for being held at all, not simply because some female competitors disregarded the hijab regulations. A few years ago, it would have been considered illegal to witness so many Iranian women in athletic attire taking part in such a large-scale public event, even if they were kept apart from the male competitors.
